Red at night, Red in the morning

Red in the Morning, Sailor's Warning

Red at Night, Sailor's Delight

How many times, do you think, have you heard that saying?  “Red in the morning, sailor’s warning, red at night, sailor’s delight”.  If you have heard, or even quoted it yourself, then you are probably aware that it is referring to possible weather conditions for that day.

The first line would, or could mean stormy weather for that day.  Line #2, would indicate the opposite, the storm has passed and the weather ahead is favorable.

Did you know, we quote Jesus every time we say that phrase?

And He answered and said to them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’  {red at night, sailor’s delight}  And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.'” {red in the morning, sailor’s warning}

This is revealed to us in Matthew 16:2-3.

We find that Jesus had just performed a huge miracle in that He fed 4000 people from only seven loaves of bread and a few small fish (Matt. 15:32-39).  When Jesus sent the multitude away, the Pharisees and Sadducees came up to Him and tested Him, well, they at least tried.  You see, all throughout Jesus’ three and a half years of ministry, the religious leaders continuously tried to trap Jesus and get Him to contradict Himself.

But Jesus, being fully God and fully man, already knew what they were up to and always responded with an appropriate, Divine response.  The full passage reads like this:

And the Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Him asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.  But He answered and said to them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘There will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ “And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’  Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?  “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.”  And He left them and went away.

The Proof of HIM is all around us!

Now, I admit I will have to do a more in-depth study to understand exactly what Jesus means by “except the sign of Jonah.”  I trust you are familiar with Jonah’s history?  To paraphrase; he was told to go to Ninevah, he didn’t want to so he boarded a boat heading in the opposite direction and eventually was thrown overboard and spent three days and three nights in the belly of a whale, or great fish, as is stated in the Bible.

But Jesus’s statement about an evil and adulterous generation in that they, and we still today, seek after a sign, something to prove to them, and us, that God really does exist and is truly out there.

Guess what?  The proof of Him is all around us!  And THAT is the point and purpose of Daily Living Survival Kit.  To help you see God, and all His glory, in the every day little things around you.  The signs of His existence are right outside your front door.

What do you know?

There are so many more things we say today that, in many cases unbeknownst to us, we are quoting from the Bible.  If you enjoyed learning about the weather forecast quote, come back, I have another coming soon.

In the mean time, if you know of a biblical quote used today, post it below.  I’d love to hear about it.
